Making the decision to work from home can be a big one, and it comes with a lot to consider, not the least of which is where you’ll get the work done. Creating a home office can be a challenge, especially if you don’t have much space or are on a tight budget. Fortunately, there are several options these days for home-based entrepreneurs. You don’t have to limit yourself to a small room in the basement if you need to spread out; you can simply create a space for your work using a shed in the backyard. Designing and decorating can eat up your funds, but with a few careful decisions, you can turn any room into an envious office space without breaking the bank.

Consider Buying

If your current home doesn’t have the space for an office or workroom, consider leveling up and buying a new home that will accommodate you and your business. This comes with considerable advantages, including tax write-offs, but you’ll need to think about the details before making a move. Make sure you search online for homes in your price range (Orange County homes have sold for $275,000 over the past 180 days), but before you do that, think about a realistic budget that won’t leave you with regret down the road. Next, find out how to get pre-approved for a loan and research different fixed-rate loan options (conventional loans, FHA loans, etc.) so you’ll have peace of mind, and look for a real estate agent who will be easy to work with and understands how COVID-19 has changed the market. Your agent will be a major asset, so he or she should be experienced and able to meet your needs right off the bat.

Build It

If moving isn’t an option but you don’t have much space in your home for a business, consider building a shed on your property that will give you all the room you need. The average cost of erecting a shed ranges anywhere from $1,000 to $15,000. Many entrepreneurs are going this route because it’s an affordable way to create space and stay close to home. The right shed will keep you cool in summer and warm in winter and will have ample room for your office, plus some storage solutions if you need to keep inventory on hand. One of the major benefits of building a shed to use for your business is that you’ll be afforded some privacy, which is important if you have a family and want to keep your private and professional lives separate.

Use a Spare Room

Turning an extra room in your home into an office or workspace can be a challenge, especially if it doesn’t have much square footage. Take into account the location of the room within the home; if it’s near an area that gets a lot of use by the family, you’ll likely regret your decision to turn it into an office. The room should have a door, access to the internet, and plenty of light. Keep in mind that even a small space can be turned into an office if you have the right equipment; there are many different kinds of organizational tools and furniture on the market these days that will allow you to function easily no matter how big the room is.

Make It Work for You

Remember that not all home office spaces are made equally. You don’t have to model yours after another; it should be specific to your needs and accessible to you and anyone involved in your business. Many disabled individuals choose to work from home because it’s much easier for them to do so, and if you’re living with a disability, make sure you design your home office to work for your needs. You deserve a space to create and work that is a perfect fit!

Creating the perfect space for your home-based business is a very personal thing, so take your time and do a little research on your options before making any decisions. Be realistic about what you require and how much you can afford from the very beginning.
